Sports Leaders UK was a beneficiary of the Milton Keynes Sporting Luncheon Club meeting on Monday (June 8), attended by former Prime Minister, Sir John Major, and Paralympian Gold Medallist, Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson, who is the Patron of Sports Leaders UK.

Trained Sports Leaders deliver nearly three quarters of a million hours of 'guided sport' every week, recent research has shown. The voluntary work undertaken by 200,000 Sports Leaders forms an important part of the national delivery of sport, involving three per cent of the population aged 16 and above.

A gruelling 500-mile cycle ride in France by a team from Heald Solicitors will help create more access to sports leadership training for young people in Milton Keynes. A cheque for £1,250, raised from the sponsored ride, was donated on May 26 by Partner Nick Crook, to Sports Leaders UK Chief Executive, Linda Plowright. 

Mountain Leader Training UK have included the Level 2 Award in Basic Expedition Leadership on the qualification matrix in the National Guidelines for Climbing and Hillwalking Leaders.

Sports Leaders UK celebrated a record year on April 1st with registration of the 200,000th candidate during 2008/9 - a 10% increase on last year. Take-up of Sports Leaders UK awards has grown exponentially since 2007, when we completed the first one million candidate registrations during its 25th anniversary year. The second million was forecast for the five years leading up to 2012.

The first ever Sports Leaders UK National Convention will be held this summer at the stadium of MK Dons in Milton Keynes. More than 300 Sports Leaders from all over Britain will attend the day-long session, which will develop leadership skills, showcase paths to further education, employment and volunteering, and allow business partners to promote their services.

Young Sports Leaders met Welsh Assembly Members last night (March 24) to help make Wales a fitter, healthier nation. The youngsters, who have completed Sports Leaders UK qualifications, demonstrated their skills and experience on the eve of the launch of a new sport and physical activity strategy for Wales.

National sports education charity, Sports Leaders UK, has challenged two Milton Keynes store bosses to walk 100,000 steps to help local young people gain leadership qualifications. Sports Leaders UK will give a free, one year leadership training course upon the successful completion of each of the 100,000 steps by Nick Wynne, Manager of the new Sainsbury's and Robert Goodman, Centre Director of thecentre:mk.
