Frequently Asked Questions/Troubleshooting

Q. Is this an award or a qualification?
A. In fact, it's neither. This is a teaching resource. It has been the intention of Sports Leaders UK to produce a teaching resource that is simple, practical, fun and easy to deliver, and that will enable learners to feel part of the spirit of the Games regardless of where they live in the UK.

Q. What is the aim of the resource?
A. The resource is aimed at helping teach the Sports Leaders UK values and also the Olympic and Paralympic values, in a practical and focused way. In the run up to the London Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2012, Sports Leaders UK firmly believes that all its' learners should make the link between being a Sports Leader in their community and the Olympic and Paralympic Games. In order to achieve this, learners must understand the importance of the values that underpin both their own leadership activities, and the Olympic and Paralympic movement, thus resulting in learners adopting the values by which they conduct their daily lives.

Q. So, it is about the Olympic Games then?
A. No. The resource doesn't look at anything to do with the Olympics, it's history, countries that participate, or gold medals. The only link to the Olympic and Paralympic movement is the use of their values. The values of the Olympic and Paralympic movement have been used along with the values of Sports Leaders UK to get learners to think about and work towards the values whilst they lead.

Q. Why will it be useful?
A. Every learner must work towards the values of Sports Leaders UK. This resource will enable Tutor/Assessors to teach the values in a practical and focused way.

Q. What age range is the resource for?
A. There are no minimum or maximum ages. However, Sports Leaders UK anticipate that it is best suited for learners aged nine to 19.

Q. What is the Inspire programme?
A. The Inspire programme features a mix of projects from communities and non-profit making organisations across the UK. Inspire looks for exciting and innovative projects, events or activities that have been inspired by London 2012. The programme aims to make regional and local communities feel part of the Games. The Sports Leaders UK Teaching Values Through Leadership resource has been granted the Inspire mark.

Q. Where do I get a resource from, and how much will it cost?
A. The resource is free to all official organisations (for example schools, sports clubs, local authorities, voluntary organisations). The Teaching Values Through Leadership resource will be included as a free added extra on the Sports Leaders UK Qualifications That Change Lives CD-ROM Tutor Resource. (Please note that this will be the only format the resource will be produced in.)

Q. How do I deliver a course?
A. There are no application forms to complete - simply deliver the content of the resource to learners when it is appropriate. Tutors may choose to deliver this resource as a stand-alone course that will have links with, but run outside of, other Sports Leaders UK awards and qualifications. Alternatively the games, activities and ideas in the resource can be incorporated into an existing Sports Leaders UK award or qualification, helping to highlight and enhance the combined values and the link between Sports Leaders and London 2012.

Q. How long will it take to deliver?
A. Sports Leaders UK suggests that this resource could be delivered over a period of three to four hours.

Q. Who can deliver it?
A. Only official organisations that are registered with Sports Leaders UK are able to deliver this resource. Any appropriate member of staff from within the organisation is able to deliver. In the case of organisations using qualified Level 2 Award in Community Sports Leadership or Level 3 Certificate in Higher Sports Leadership learners to deliver, the organisation must ensure that the learner is supervised appropriately.

Q. Is there a cut off point for delivery?
A. Yes. The delivery of this resource must cease on September 30th 2012.

Q. Is there a certificate and how do I apply for one?
A. Yes there is. The Certificate Request Form can be found in the Teaching Values Through Leadership resource on the Qualifications That Change Lives CD-ROM Tutor Resource. Complete this form and email it to Customer Service via contact@sportsleaders.org.
