Q. What age do people need to be to complete
the Level 3 Award in Day Walk Leadership?
A. Learners must be 17 or older on the day
that the course starts. However, they must be 18 or older upon
completion.
Q. Is there an upper age limit?
A. No, the Level 3 Award in Day Walk
Leadership is suitable for people who are 17 or older. There
is no upper age limit.
Q. What is the difference between the Level 3
Award in Day Walk Leadership, and the Level 3 Certificate in Basic
Expedition Leadership?
A. The Level 3 Award in Day Walk Leadership
does not involve overnight stays and camping. Apart from that it is
identical to the Level 3 Certificate in Basic Expedition
Leadership.
Q. How long does the course take to
deliver?
A. This qualification has 82 guided learning
hours (including 15 hours demonstration of leadership).
However, the time it takes will depend on a range of factors
including the previous experience of your learners (and their
general enthusiasm and attitude towards the course!), learner
numbers, delivery methods and external links. Go to guided

Q. Tell me more about the 15 hours
demonstration of leadership?
A. Every learner must complete 15 hours
demonstration of leadership within the local community. Learners
must only lead whilst under the direct supervision of their
Tutor/Assessor or another responsible adult. Responsibility for the
supervision of your learners may be handed to other appropriately
qualified and responsible people (for example, the primary school
teacher of the children being led), but only with their full
understanding of the roles, responsibilities and expectations of

Q. Do my learners have to gain a First Aid
qualification?
A. Yes, it is a compulsory requirement that
all learners must hold a current and valid First Aid certificate
(eight hours) in order to complete this qualification. Go to

Q. My course involves going away from the
Approved Assessment Centre(s). Do Sports Leaders UK provide
insurance cover?
A. Learner insurance is provided as part of
the learner registration fee for the Level 3 Award in Day Walk
Leadership. For information on insurance, please see Learner

Q. What can a qualified
learner of the Level 3 Award in Day Walk Leadership
do?
A. Upon successfully completing the
qualification, Day Walk Leaders are able to independently
lead walking groups in lowland countryside, and impart the
knowledge and skills required to walk in the countryside.
Q. Will learners be able to use learning from
the Level 3 Award in Day Walk Leadership to gain the Level 3
Certificate in Basic Expedition Leadership?
A. Yes, we expect that at some stage in the
future it will be possible for a Day Walk Leader to have prior
learning accredited in order to gain the Level 3 Certificate in
Basic Expedition Leadership. Exact details have yet to be
finalised.
Q. What qualification does a Tutor/Assessor
need in order to deliver this qualification?
A. Prospective Tutor/Assessor's will need a
Mountain Leader or Walking Group Leader Award to deliver the
qualification, and they must send their certificate confirming this
to Sports Leaders UK when they submit their course
application.
