Communication Skills

Encourage your Sports Leaders to:

  • Present information visually.
  • Use alternative implements or colours instead of a whistle, for example Boccia refereeing is non-verbal and uses coloured paddles to officiate.
  • Use a buddy to support with communication.
  • Use symbols for example Makaton, Signing or PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System).
  • Utilise a communication skill relevant to them.

Some thoughts:

  • Am I trying to teach my Sports Leaders to use communication methods that they are not used to or comfortable with?
  • If I have learners who use sign language, could they teach other leaders sign language?
  • Could I use a sound system to support communication?
  • How many different methods of communication could I employ in order to create an environment where these methods are acceptable within the group?
  • Could I be more creative to support my Sports Leaders favoured communication methods, for example producing flash cards?
